{"id":279,"date":"2011-06-09T21:06:30","date_gmt":"2011-06-10T03:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/?p=279"},"modified":"2011-09-02T09:44:58","modified_gmt":"2011-09-02T15:44:58","slug":"im-on-a-bridge-to-nowhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/?p=279","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m on a Bridge to Nowhere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have lived in El Paso for a while one of the things you may have noticed on the westside is the bridge to nowhere. \u00a0It&#8217;s right before the Sunland Park exit and there appears to be no reason for it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<dl class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 468px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Bridge to nowhere\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5075\/5815685589_670a515d42_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"390\" \/><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Who put that here?<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There was once a purpose but when the drainage dam was built the road to it got severed leaving only the entrance from the\u00a0neighborhood\u00a0in Buena Vista. \u00a0That side is fenced off.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Bridge\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2465\/5816289558_7284dc3b6d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The bridge taunts you from behind the gate<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have always wondered if it was possible to get to it so today I set off to try. I looked at the area from above on\u00a0Google\u00a0and found a dirt road that entered the drainage area from the side of the Westside Recreation Center. There is a gate but today it was open.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 527px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"   \" title=\"Map 2\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3100\/5816337718_79efc62268_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"389\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looks all flat and easy from here.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Once in I drove to a wash area where some taggers had hit some concrete walls.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<dl class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 624px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3355\/5815530329_46747fe551_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"410\" \/><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Krylon tracks<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From there I drove along the top ridge and then down the side of the dam. \u00a0That proved to be a dumb move as once I got to the bottom I was\u00a0greeted by 3 foot boulders blocking my way. After trying unsuccessfully\u00a0in 4low to get back up the only way I found around was by skirting the bottom of the dam sideways next to the boulders. It was a long 1o minutes of\u00a0sideways\u00a0slip and sliding.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3299\/5815546289_442b5b7921.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Easy does it<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I won&#8217;t lie and say I wasn&#8217;t sweating bullets. \u00a0The rocky substrate kept sending me towards the boulders, I had to fight the urge to gas it and just let myself creep along. \u00a0The end of the boulder line drops you right at the entrance to the bridge so all in all it worked out.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5105\/5815587297_4fe4185b27_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Success!<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I wasn&#8217;t going to be able to go back the way I came so I traveled down a rocky and rutted hill which put me right next to I-10, before the Sunland exit. \u00a0For future reference, it may be possible to go this route\u00a0instead of the tricky way i went.\u00a0 \u00a0I think its time to look into winches.<\/p>\n<p>Full Flickr set here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/sets\/72157626799492329\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bridge to Nowhere <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you have lived in El Paso for a while one of the things you may have noticed on the westside is the bridge to nowhere. \u00a0It&#8217;s right before the Sunland Park exit and there appears to be no reason for it.
