{"id":290,"date":"2011-06-14T21:50:26","date_gmt":"2011-06-15T03:50:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/?p=290"},"modified":"2011-09-02T09:43:52","modified_gmt":"2011-09-02T15:43:52","slug":"portland-cement-reservoir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/?p=290","title":{"rendered":"Portland Cement Reservoir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another\u00a0largely unknown\u00a0oddity\u00a0on El Paso&#8217;s Westside is the Portland Cement Reservoir. \u00a0Its a small man made lake that sits between Paisano and I-10. \u00a0To get to it you need to exit from Paisano onto Race Track Drive and head towards the Buena Vista Grocery. \u00a0You then turn right on Torres Street and drive past a red, 3 story\u00a0brick building. The road is dirt from there and you are looking for a turn that will take you up hill next to a\u00a0mobile\u00a0home that sits on the top. \u00a0If you pass a cement plant you have gone to far:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=El+Paso,+Texas&amp;ll=31.805117,-106.530862&amp;spn=0.0153,0.027874&amp;t=h&amp;z=16\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"   \" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2648\/5833575877_c45ca109cf_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not to far off the beaten path <\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy enough to get to, the first hill between the mobile home and the cement plant was kind of steep but not impassable. \u00a0Once up top you pass a large water tower and it should be a little ways off to the left.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/5834006864\/in\/set-72157626838305985\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3253\/5834006864_b2f76fc4f8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Come on in, the water&#39;s fine!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;m guessing Cemex or Jobe uses this for their quarry operations, as there was some sort of pump and line going into the lake. \u00a0 Schools of mosquito fish were in the water so it must not be to bad. \u00a0There was a large presence of\u00a0algae in the water but it didn&#8217;t have any funny or moldy smells. There&#8217;s a good chance of seeing a bob cat or even a mountain lion given the presence of\u00a0birds in the trees and several large jack rabbits that I spooked off.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/5834032174\/in\/set-72157626838305985\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5302\/5834032174_4192ba4e53.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Over the dam and through the rocks...<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Across the dam there was an area that may have been a boat launch at one time.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/5833488893\/in\/set-72157626838305985\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"   \" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3590\/5833488893_b845ef3d3b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boat launch?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From the boat launch area a road continues on the right around the lake.
