{"id":323,"date":"2011-06-29T14:35:04","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T20:35:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/?p=323"},"modified":"2011-09-02T09:41:40","modified_gmt":"2011-09-02T15:41:40","slug":"the-dam-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/?p=323","title":{"rendered":"The Dam Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On our way back from a trip to Durango Colorado, we stopped for some lunch at the Elephant Butte Dam in Truth or\u00a0Consequences, New Mexico. \u00a0The Dam water levels are at historic lows:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/5881973183\/in\/photostream\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5271\/5881973183_2c7e222a13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Dam top<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For comparison here is a pic from its peak, early 90&#8217;s:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_324\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ts.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-324\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-324\" title=\"Dam\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ts-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ts-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ts.jpg 478w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Dam from the other side when full<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the most striking effects of this is how desolate and barren it feels now. \u00a0Now, I know its in the middle of a desert but when it was full it was a lot more inviting. \u00a0This just felt&#8230;hot, like being in a hot tub in summer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All this exposure though has uncovered some interesting features though, most notably the site of an old hospital:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/5882446424\/in\/set-72157626946385347\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5227\/5882446424_e3764a713c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The hospital ruins<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0restaurant at the Dam site has recently been\u00a0remodeled and they had pretty good food at decent prices. \u00a0There is even a patio for chilling with a beer which with all this heat may be the biggest seller.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/5881916743\/in\/set-72157626946385347\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5150\/5881916743_a11a9e0656.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dam Restaurant <\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are paths that were built before the water was so high so it is easy to get down from the\u00a0restaurant\u00a0area but to get to Hospital Canyon we had to drive down some dirt roads, not 4&#215;4 stuff but not your beaten path.
