text-align: left;\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?msa=0&amp;msid=204600700021198483142.0004bd0553655a801ad2e&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;t=h&amp;ll=31.773136,-106.440284&amp;spn=0.003009,0.00707&amp;source=embed\">Evergreen Cemetery<\/a> in a larger map<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Concordia Cemetery\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rust2.com\/?p=444\" target=\"_blank\">Concordia Cemetery<\/a>\u00a0may be the &#8220;big thing&#8221; in town, due to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Wesley_Hardin\" target=\"_blank\">John Wesley Hardin<\/a> tie in but Evergreen has its own\u00a0uniqueness that makes it worth visiting. \u00a0It was established in 1894, about 38 years after Concordia and\u00a0there&#8217;s\u00a0quite a bit of different between the two. \u00a0Most of Concordia is dirt and\u00a0loosely\u00a0organized; Evergreen has a lot of grassy areas, trees and tightly laid out plots.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<dl id=\"\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 510px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/6903392970\/in\/set-72157629385539002\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7114\/6903392970_2284f13510.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">The twin shrubs<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>The cemetery is still active so there are whole generations of\u00a0El Pasoians here including many prominent names that you will find on businesses and streets. \u00a0It&#8217;s a lot larger than it looks and it took us about 45\u00a0minutes to cover the main path, skimming the plots as we went.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<dl id=\"\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 437px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/6903390066\/in\/set-72157629385539002\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Headless Jesus\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7062\/6903390066_cbdf0f6257_z.jpg\" alt=\"Headless Jesus\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Headless Jesus<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Like most cemeteries, vandals have left their mark hacking off the heads and hands of many of the statues. \u00a0For the most part though it seems to have survived better than Concordia. \u00a0There were some neat features I haven&#8217;t noticed before at any of the other cemeteries\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0visited,\u00a0namely\u00a0these old\u00a0limey\u00a0portraits\u00a0affixed\u00a0the graves:<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<dl id=\"\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 437px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/6903411368\/in\/set-72157629385539002\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Happy to see you\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5312\/6903411368_2fa265f381_z.jpg\" alt=\"Happy to see you\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Happy to see you<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Oxidation was really present on many of the markers and I&#8217;m not sure if that was just unique to the stone that were used there or if it was from watering over the years to keep the <del>weeds<\/del> grass green.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<dl id=\"\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 510px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/juanoxido\/6903407292\/in\/set-72157629385539002\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Down\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5113\/6903407292_f1eb177c3a.jpg\" alt=\"Down\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Looking Down<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Many of the headstones were really ornate, more than I&#8217;ve noticed elsewhere in town. \u00a0There&#8217;s lots of statue use as well.
